That’s Amore: What is it about?
It's been quite the start to 2024 around Legacy. We opened our doors to our ninth season on January 8th, welcoming auditioners and S.O.T.A. students alike. Over fifty students and volunteers grace our theater each week, and it's been a terrific beginning. Although flu, colds, and lost voices have hit us hard, we are endeavoring to push through and find our songs and stories within our community.
One of the highlights of the past few weeks has been our rehearsal process for THAT'S AMORE, our first concert of 2024. This concert goes deeper than the title and is more than just snappy and sappy love songs. I wanted to take a moment to give you an idea of what you can expect from the concert.
With eighteen talented singers and instrumentalists and over twenty-five songs, THAT'S AMORE explores The Four Loves found in Scripture and Greek thought. We explore passion and eros, the love between friends, the love and affection found in family and community, and that deep self-sacrificial love that is the highest of love.
Each song was carefully selected to emphasize the four types of love through their lyrics.
Some of the lyrics that have deeply touched us include . . .
"I'm everything I am . . . because you loved me."
"I won't give up on us . . . even if the skies get rough . . . I'm giving you all my love."
"With arms open wide, I threw away my pride. I'll sacrifice for you, dedicate my life to you."
"And didn't you know that you're my hero? You're everything I wish I could be."
"Lean on me when you're not strong. I'll be your strength. I'll help you carry on."
Due to the holiday's consumeristic nature, the time around Valentine's Day can be difficult for many people. If you have a significant other, you might feel pressured to find the perfect gift, plan an extravagant date, or get the largest box of chocolates to express your love. On the other hand, if you are single, the sight of giant red hearts and teddy bears might make you feel incomplete or as if you're missing out on love.
The society we live in is attempting to deceive us into buying a fake version of love. It's a love that comes with a price tag attached to it. It mainly concentrates on the physical aspects and fails to compare to the profound richness of love God has made available to us.
THAT'S AMORE attempts to go back to the beginning and define love for what it can be if we start living a bit more counter-culturally.
Love is patient and kind.
It is not jealous or boastful or proud.
It is not rude.
It does not demand its own way.
Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.
Love never gives up.
Never loses faith.
It is always hopeful.
Love never fails.
And that is Amore, Friends.
We are excited to take you on a musical journey through The Four Loves, featuring genres such as Motown, Pop, Broadway, Rock, Folk, County, and Soul. As the director and one of the performers, I am incredibly proud of this powerful concert.
Tickets are on sale now, and we hope you will join us for THAT'S AMORE on February 23, 24, and 25. Dress in your best red or pink and make it a date night, a family night with the kids, or a girl's night out. It is going to be very special!
